Nitrates at 40ppm-- Help please

Just to circle back to the title - all pools will have nitrates in them and there is no chemical you can add to reduce them. There is also no way to filter them out (except with some very specialized ion exchange filters that would never be found on a pool equipment pad). Nitrates can sometimes be converted back to nitrogen gas by bacteria but that would not apply to pools. Nitrates and phosphates are nutrients for algae growth but can be mostly ignored in a properly sanitized pool. Only phosphates can removed from pool water but that does not help with a current algae bloom. Phosphate reduction should be seen in the same light as algaecide use - it's not necessary but it can help to avoid bad algae outbreaks in the future.

And, for reference, my pool has 80ppm nitrates, has low phosphates (PO4 < 125ppb) and it's clear as glass & algae-free.....
