Newbie sand filter help please!

Hello,

I want to replace my busted old DE filter with a sand filter. My in ground pool is about 31,000 gallons and I have a new Pentair Whisperflo 1 hp pump on it. The filter I'm considering buying is a Hayward 300 lb sand filter, but I'm concerned that my pump has too much GPM for the filter, which is designed for 62 GPM. But then, I've read elsewhere that even a 1.5 hp pump would barely be good enough for a 300 lb. sand filter.

Any thoughts, guys? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Your 1 HP pump will be fine with that filter size. I currently run a similar set up in my 32K gallon pool, see signature. 1 HP pump, 350 lb sand filter. I would suggest going up to the 350 lb filter as well. It's difficult to oversize a filter of any type. Undersized filters, especially sand, can lead to very poor filtration if the pump over powers the sand, which leads to channeling.
