We moved to Madison WI about 6 years ago from Ohio. We were looking online for homes and we connected with a realtor in Madison to visit some of our selections. We had lived in the country in Ohio and had a small seasonal creek and a pond that we had had dug. We were looking for a Madison area property with some sort of water feature. Little did we know that one of the houses that the realtor had selected for us to look at would have a water feature in the basement, it is a 20x40 28K gallon indoor pool. At the time we first saw the house the pool had been empty for several years because of leaks that the owner did not want to deal with. It is a 50 year old house so a 50 year old pool. It is a great house in addition to the pool so we put in an offer within days and moved shortly after. We had two companies come in to locate and fix leaks in the pool with very little success. But watching what they did I determined that I could do as well myself. I had done some SCUBA diving while in college and I already had an oilless air compressor so I bought a new regulator and over the next 2 months located 20 to 30 small leaks and patched them. Since then the leakage has been in the 10 gallon per day range down from 300 gallons per day when we first filled the pool.
Fast forward 5-1/2 years and the pool walls are getting covered with dark algae. We had used the common chlorine pucks in the chlorine feeded attached to the pump. No where had I read or been told that these chlorine pucks contained a chemical that would build up to the point that it prevented the chlorine from functioning and that the only solution would be a total water change.
Earlier this year we drained the pool and while it was empty we had it painted, if anyone needs a recomendation for pool painting in southern Wisconsin or Northern Illinois I'd be happy to give a referal.
After getting the pool refilled and back up to temperture I began searching for chlorine without stabilizer. That is when I came across the TFP website. My plan going forward is to use up the chlorine tablets that I have at least untill the stabilizer reaches the minimum recomended and then switch to liquid chlorine.
