Liquid Chlorine
Hi,

I'm brand new here and have some questions. I noticed when I entered my pool info there are only choices for SWG and liquid chlorine. I am a monthly enzyme user switching from a weekly dichlor shock to a non-stabilized cal hypo chlorine in the form of weekly granular shock and additionally floating pucks. I am making the switch because my CYA is elevated. Should I be using liquid chlorine instead?
Also, because I use enzymes, my dealer says I don't have to worry too much about FC levels, because the enzymes are cleaning the pool. But the enzyme manufacturer even says that FC should be between 0.5 and 1ppm. Everything I read says that enzymes don't sanitize, they just help eliminate organics so chlorine can work better.
Everytime I shock my pool, I have zero chlorine the next morning. I am waiting for my Taylor test kit to arrive so I can get a better handle on the numbers because I just don't feel comfortable with 0 chlorine although my pool is sparkling. Also, one dealer tells me that my alkalinity is fine and the reading is 80 and another dealer tells me that my alkalinity is 58, but I don't know if maybe they are adjusting for the elevated CYA level.
If anyone has any insight about cal hypo vs liquid chlorine, and enzyme use that would be appreciated.

Welcome to TFP!!!

We don't use or recommend enzymes, or weekly shock.

We recommend you chlorinate with SWCG or liquid chlorine. Tablets add CYA, and at higher levels of CYA, you cannot maintain enough FC to sanitize the pool. CalHypo adds calcium, which is unnecessary in a vinyl pool, and at higher levels, even in a vinyl pool, cause scaling. No reason not to use Tablets or CalHypo, if you understand what they do to the pool.

We recommend you maintain your FC levels based on your CYA level. Good read here...Link-->FC/CYA Levels

Great job on getting the test kit! Some more good reading...Link-->Pool Care Basics

The tablets I got are non-stabilized because my CYA is elevated from the dichlor. Darn on the calcium, my regular pool dealer told me not to worry about it but I let another dealer sell me on it because they insisted I needed it. Luckily I only added a fraction of what they suggested. Ugh!

You’re experiencing what lots of people discover in that each store you take a water sample to can give you wildly different results and advice. Its a good question.

Does your dealer really say chlorine is not needed when using enzymes? 😬

Basically he tells me not to worry about the levels, but on the other hand he tells me throw in some shock. He's very vague. Although he actually said the words once that enzymes will kill bacteria I know that to be absolutely false so I've lost trust in him.

Also, I know CYA will require more chlorine, but do you adjust your TA levels based on the CYA meaning add more alkalinity since the CYA drives the TA up.

Smells like being poolstored lol.

You don't need to do any correction. Use the test kit to get your TA. You don't need to do any correction, use pool math at it is all accounted for. Link-->PoolMath
