New pump installed. Getting power, not working!

Hello everyone, I just installed a aquasheild 230v 1.5hp pump. I’ve had the equipment for 10 years and I changed the capacitor on the old pump just a few months ago. Power was getting to the pump so I figured it was time to replace the old pump. My problem is that I’m still getting power to my new pump, when the filter switch is on, but it won’t run, I’ve checked everything I can think of and I’m honestly stumped. I replaced the switch relay, no change, triple checked the wiring and tested it all. Everything else works as it should and I’m not understanding what I could be missing. Any help would be great! Thank you in advance.

Check voltage from red to black.

Take the wires off of the pump and check red to ground and then black to ground.

Can you show the circuit breaker?

Note: When the wires are connected to the pump, the voltage from one wire can go through the motor windings and read on the other wire.

So, you can have one live wire and one dead wire, but you will still read 120 from the dead wire to ground. However, reading from line-to-line will show 0 volts.

Most likely, one wire is dead, which will show when you remove the wires from the terminals and test to ground.

James, I do have a dead wire, red had 120 black had nothing, even at the breaker. I’m no electrician but you sir have helped me identify my issue. I will replace my 20amp breaker and let you know. Can’t thank you enough.

If you measure between the red and black wires feeding the panel, are you getting 240 volts?

The thick red and black wires come from the main panel. You should read 240 measuring from red to black. If yes, the problem is with the pump circuit breaker. If no, the problem is with the circuit breaker in the main panel that feeds the subpanel.

Note that pump breakers should be GFCI breakers. So, if you replace the pump circuit breaker, use a gfci breaker.
