Our in-ground pool was recently finished a few weeks ago. We just now got the equipment installed so now our water is green & brown. We tested the water and found our FC was 0 and CYA was also 0. We live in a rural area and are limited with supplies due to being out of season. We are unable to get any stabilizer so we shocked our pool. Our FC level has been high for 2 days now. Is this normal? Does shock raise your CYA? Should we Floc now and then vacuum to waste?

Here are some things to ask or consider:
- How are you testing your water? If it's not a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit, that must be step #1. Store testing is of no help.
- Are you on a well?
- Depending on the product you add to water, some do increase CYA (i.e. tabs, powdered shock, etc). Liquid chlorine or regular bleach do not increase CYA.
- If you can't get stabilizer at a local Walmart or Home Depot, you can order it online.
- We use the SLAM Process to kill and remove algae. If you are on a well with iron, that's a different matter. But algae removal is always first.
- We almost never recommend using floc or clarifier. It doesn't not kill algae and can complicate filtration later.

Yes we are testing with a TF-100 test kit and no we are not on well water. We are going to use Floc due to their being so much dirt in the water from when it rained.

Heavy rains, flooding, and dirt getting in the pool happen every year, but time and chlorine are usually the best course of action. If you elect to use floc, remember two things - it will not kill algae. For that you still need to perform a SLAM Process. Also, be very careful to ensure that in no way does any floc reach the sand or you'll be forced to change it.
