Hi guys, I have never owned a pool so I have a dumb question. I am going to get either a cartridge or de filter pump, do you still use chlorine and other chemicals in those pools like you do with a sand filter? I’m going to get a 24’ round pool 48”. I think from what I’ve read a 150 sq ft cartridge filter or for a de filter the Hayward e40 1 HP would be good choices for a 24’ pool? Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to TFP! Actually, the type of filter has no bearing on your chlorine question. The filter only provides the mechanical filtration - grabbing the particles (bugs, dirt, debris, etc). All pools require chlorine for water clarity and sanitation. Make sure to read our ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry for more info. A 1 HP would be fine. I would recommend a 2-speed though so that it can run on low speed which is better for energy use. A single speed motor can use a lot of energy. Hope that helps.
