I'm 3 weeks into my new pool and all is well with the chemistry. The PB set my main pump to circulate 24/7 in addition to the in floor cleaner running 6hrs a day. My question is, is it necessary to circulate the water 24/7 or is 12 hrs a day appropriate?

S,

Here is my standard answer to pump run time questions...

Each pool is a little different... You generally run a pump for three reasons:

1. To keep surface debris moving and being pushed into the skimmers. The more debris the more often you need to run the pump.

2. If you have a Salt Water Chlorine Generator (SWCG) you'll need to run it long enough to generate the amount of chlorine needed.

3. To circulate the water to ensure the chlorine is effectively distributed throughout the pool. Three or four hours per day is all that is needed for this to happen in most pools.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Your auto chlorinator may require an extended runtime of your pump, which is variable speed, so likely set at a very low speed for 18 hours of the 24. I run my 19000 gallon SWCG Pool for 22 hours per day. 18 Hours at 1500 rpm and 4 hours at 3000 rpm. I have the same in-floor system as you.

Ok thanks, I'll adjust my RPM's down a little. When your running at 3000 RPM's is that when your floor cleaners are running and at 1500 RPM your're just circulating?

S,

Yes, I missed the 3" tab chlorinator... most people here don't use them as they the gateway to ..... algae... :p

Jim R.

I don't plan on chlorinating solely with the tabs. I'll also do liquid chlorine since it doesn't have stabilizer in it. a
