Hello all ! My first post here but I have been wandering for a while reading tips

I'm in Quebec, Canada and the weather has been very nice lately.
We bought a new house last september with an inground pool.
Before closing it last fall, I noticed that some water was getting behind the liner making it float a little above the bottom. From what I had read in the forums, that can happen if the the surrounding soil if saturated with water and it's better to just keep a good water level to force it out.

So, long story short, the water did got away (although not totally) before freezing and there we are now in April with (yay!) an early spring.
There was a lot of water behind the liner now and I found out that the owner of the house "tried" to patch the liner that tore around a pipe fitting. That's from where the water was getting behind the liner (I hope). It was a messy job and after removing the (broken) face plate and the dangling patch, I removed the water behind the liner by pumping it back into the pool. All the wrinkles disappeared and the liner went back right where it belongs

Then, I cut a large round patch from spare liner and used PVC glue to cover the whole thing with at least 2 inches more diameter than the damaged area:

I covered the whole thing since I think it would be better than trying to fix the tear and just do like if it was a new liner: screw the face plate and then cut the liner with an x-acto like that (picture from a video, not mine):

However, while looking for the screw holes with my hand, I came across a bump in the way. Fortunately, I took pictures before and found out that there is a plastic tab on one side:

That's when I understood why the previous face plate was broken: the previous owner tried to screw the face plate but that tab was in the way and broke it.

That's also when I thought that I needed to ask experts what to do about that in here 🤗
I tried to look on Google images what model that fitting is but all I find are images of already mounted parts and ads. And also more ads and websites with ads with the same images.

Should I just cut the plastic tab in the way so the face plate fit? Or maybe I don't have the good parts ?

Yours truly,

O.

Hi @JamesW
Yes, indeed ! I think you nailed it. I looked at other pictures I took from different angles and the tab that I previously thought was only ~1mm thick is actually full like in that picture.
So, the previous owner used another model of fitting than the two return jets for that one but tried to put the same face plate (Hayward SP1408B) thus breaking it while tightening the screws...

That brings another question:
That port is not a return. Here you can see in green the two return jets, and that port on the side in red:

From what I have read, it might be a "vacuum port" that is connected to the bottom drain. However, when I open the second hole in the skimmer connecting to the bottom drain, there is no succion from that port. Maybe it is blocked by something. So mostly, that port doesn't seem to be "active" in the system.

If that is the case, can I just leave it covered with the patch like it is right now ?

Without knowing what it is, I can't really know if it's ok to leave it unused or not.

Do you have a picture of the system?
Since it's underground, I can only guess. But what is sure is I don't have a valve to switch from the skimmer to the bottom drain near the pump. There is only one input coming out of the ground connected directly to the pump and one output going in ground after the filter to the return jets and another one going somewhere for the draining/backwash. To "activate" the bottom drain, I found out I have to manually open a second hole at the bottom of the skimmer by unscrewing a screw and rotating a pear-shaped plate like in that picture (not exactly the same thing I have, but the operation looks the same):

Post some good pics of your equipment pad. Cleaner lines arent connected to the bottom drains. It's likely this is a powered cleaner line amd could be on it's own suction or even a pressure side cleaner on the return side
