I'm a new pool owner in Northern Virginia, Fairfax County. From my pool inspection report, I know I have a Polaris vacuum with a significant leak, a pump that is leaking, broken timer, and a "good condition" FNS Plus 60 filter. I'm trying to read up here on this website to learn what I have to do initially as a new pool owner, and the first thing I need to do is buy one of the test kits mentioned here. I've scheduled a "Pool School" with Leslie's at a cost of $125. A pool tech will come to my house for an hour and show me what equipment I have, how to maintain/service it, clean the pool, and test. I think I'll have to ignore the testing/chemical part so I can follow the TFP methods, but at least someone can show me what valve does what as it looks like a confusing grid of pipes, levers and valves. I don't even know where I'm supposed to fill with DE and water for the filter. So as much as I think the tech will be wasting most of our $ and time, it seems I need the orientation to get going. I can't find any place cheaper than Leslie's to do this. Am I missing anything here about thinking a pool tech is the way to go to get started?
