Hi all! I'm very glad to have found this place. Seems like exactly what I need.
I'm a new homeowner and, along with that, a new pool owner. I've never had a pool before. I'm learning as fast as I can so that we can use it this summer!
The details of my pool should be in my signature, but just in case: it's a 7,500-gallon, round, vinyl, above-ground pool.

A week ago, I took off the cover and started reckoning with the pool. I filled the sand filter and started pumping.
The early measurements (with strips; didn't have TF-Pro yet) showed zero FC/TC, about 7.4 pH, and about 180 TA.
It was a bit greenish and a bit cloudy.

I did some research and decided that I should get the TA under control before fiddling with pH.
So, three days ago, I added 52oz (6.5 cups) 14.5% HCl, which brought the pH down to around 7.0.
Yesterday, I built a PVC fountain and have been aerating through that on and off since then for a total of about 8 hours.

Today, I got my TF-Pro and did a full suite of tests: 0 FC, 0 CC, 7.2 pH, 120 TA, 100 CH, <30 CYA. So it seems my acid & aeration is having the intended effect!
I plan to continue aerating it when I can and testing pH twice a day until the pH comes back to around 7.6, then confirm that the TA hasn't fallen too far.

My questions:
  • Once my pH is back up (and the TA has come down), should I SLAM to try and clear up the pool? It has zero FC, zero CC, and less than 30ppm CYA. It's still a bit greenish and a bit cloudy.
  • Despite some vacuuming and skimming, there's still some crud at the bottom. I think it's mostly leaves and such. Can I wait to polish that off until the pool is chemically ready to go? Or is there a reason to prioritize that?
I've attached photos of the pool, including my homemade fountain and the plumbing.

I'm brand new to all this and hoping I haven't screwed it up too much yet.

Understood. Should I do both at once? The ideal levels page is showing me 40-50 CYA, so should I shoot for 45 CYA and 7 FC? Or should I start with SLAM right away?

I have 2.5 gallons Pool Shock but no stabilizer. I'll have to pick up some stabilizer tomorrow, but I can start with the Pool Shock anytime. What does that count as for purposes of Pool Math? Bleach?

One more question: my CYA is too low to get a numeric reading with the TF-Pro. It was cloudy but even up to the 30ppm line, the black dot was still quite visible.

For calculation purposes, should I consider myself at 0 CYA? 10 CYA? 20 CYA?

Since Saturday I've got my CYA at 25-30 and have been trying to SLAM. There was a lot of Crud in the bottom of the pool that we had to vacuum & skim out, but I think it's finally out of there.

Although the water is no longer green, it's still pretty cloudy. If you take a look at my PoolMath logs, you'll see I've been putting in bleach every few hours from morning to night, and my FC is below 2 every time I go back and check, with CC ranging between 6 and 10. heck, I just put in 80oz of 12.5% bleach and 20 minutes later I'm getting 1 FC, 9.5 CC.

(Since my FC is so low, I figured I'd check pH, and it's looking like 7.0-7.2. Is that accurate when FC is showing 1-2?)

Could my pool actually be guzzling this much chlorine? If so, I don't mind the process; I'll keep trucking along until I get my good CC and OCLT. But I want to make sure I'm not missing something, since there is no end in sight yet.

It may be worth mentioning that, up until today, all my bleach has been rather old. I'm not sure how much that affects it. I bought more this morning and it's fresh, so maybe that'll speed things up?

CYA tube test shows about 25; it's barely visible at 30 but the tube is only so tall. That means it hasn't gone down in a few days, though I have been dosing my pool pretty vigorously with bleach...

Under 30 is too sketchy to try to read. It could be much lower.

Dose to 10 FC and check every 30 mins. As the sun goes down we can remove UV loss from the equation.

Thank you so much for this advice. I've started testing and dosing about every 20 minutes and I just got 3 FC and 3.5 CC. That's the highest FC and lowest CC I've gotten yet. Will continue dosing till I get the FC above 6 for at least 20 minutes.

No going rouge. Everything is precise and controlled here. :)

10 FC needs to hold 8+ after 30 mins. Otherwise we are two thirdsing 8 at 20 mins and its 5.28 and it didn't get the extra 10 mins to drop and yeah. Stick to the plan.
