All,

I am finishing up a new pool build in Arizona, specs for my pool should be in my signature if I did things correctly.

In anticipation of my pool being completed and getting ready to get it balanced, I tested my fill water using my TF-100 test kit last night and got the following results:

Cl/Br test was clear, so essentially 0
pH: 7.5
FC: 0.5
CC: 0.5
CH: 375
TA: 220
CYA: 0

My pool has a salt cell, but as I understand it, the salt cell will remain off for the first 30 days after my pool is full.
Any suggestions on what I should be doing to prep for getting the pool balanced once it's filled?

I will have about 1 week to get the pool balanced, and then I will be traveling doing 2 week long trips back to back with 1 day in between.

Any suggestions on where to start out on this will be appreciated.

Wow! You are so far ahead of the game. Perfect planning!

1. Be prepared to chlorinate your pool manually for 30 days.....you can use tabs during this period but don't expect them to have too much addition of CYA to your pool.

2. Everything else is just fine. TA will come down on it's own. You will have to add muriatic acid to hold your pH down for quite a while so 2-3 gallons of that will be used.....it'll slow down. Test frequently and keep your pH in the 7's.....don't let it into the 8's

3. You need a helper when you are gone. all they need to know is how much chlorine to put in your pool each evening (Have you found PoolMath?).

4. When you are ready to start the SWG, up your CYA to 60 or so ppm. test it in a few days and adjust to 70 ppm

You will have a crystal pool all summer. All because of your preparation. very nice work.

Generally, you will want to add CYA up to ~50ppm and FC to maintain proper levels for your CYA using bleach, according to the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA].
And also keep the pH in the 7s.

But, you will also need to try to follow the installer recommendations for warranty purposes.

I recall when I had mine resurfaced with PebbleShean I had to pay a company for the chemistry for the first 30 days for warranty purposes. I am not sure how many times they showed up, but I was certainly not impressed and am sure I could have done a better job.

Thanks for the encouragement! This will be my first time maintaining a pool, but it seems like there is plenty of help available here to get me in the right direction. See below for some responses to your comments, and thanks again!

Will do I will likely add some stabilizer to get some CYA - There is a lot of sun in Phoenix where I am. Also I will get some tabs for the first 30 days until I get the SWG up and runnning

Thanks - I will test frequently, and hopefully after the first week of having water in the pool I will be on the road to having the water balanced

My wife will be around and is more than willing to help out while I'm gone. I have played with pool math a bit but need to spend more time with it

OK What should the CYA be at before I start the SWG?

You'll likely need to add liquid chlorine to get your FC up at first. The pucks will help maintain your FC level but be prepared to add liquid as needed.

Ideally you would like to be at 60 or so when you turn on your SWG while you are adjusting your CYA to 70-80.

Update:

So far so good - The pool got filled on Friday, and I got the filter pump running without any issues. I let the pump run almost continually over the weekend and have been brushing daily to try to keep the dust from the fresh plaster cleaned up.

I added from dry stabilizer ithrough a sock in my skimmer basket which brought my CYA to around 30, and have been adding chlorine and acid to keep the pH around 7.5 and the chlorine at around 3.

So far the water still looks crystal clear - Hopefully that continues. I'm in town until this weekend, and I plan to add a floater with a couple of tabs to keep the chlorine up while I'm away.

Should I be doing anything else at this time?

I did this as an owner/builder - Really the only instructions from the plaster company were to wait at least 30 days before starting the SWG, and to keep the pH balanced. I've been following TFP guidelines as much as possible
