New Pebble Sheen and start up NOW

Hi - Just had new Pebble Sheen installed. The manufacturers start up procedure says to lower the TA to 80 - 100 (ours is currently at 120) before lowering the PH. Our PH is off the charts and cannot be measured. I used Pool Math to see how much acid I should add to lower the TA but it doesn't calculate and just says to lower the PH first.

Pool Math says to add 96 oz of acid to get the PH in balance. Just seems so much so am going to start slower with maybe 32 oz. Of course the pool start up company my plasterer hired has not done anything except dump in some sequestering agent (which I don't use anyway) so I am taking back control of this.

The manufactuer says to pre-dilute the acid in a 5 gallon bucket but doesn't say how to disperse. Should I evenly distribute it around the pool instead of just dumping it all in front of a jet. Any opinions are appreciated. Thank you.

Post the startup procedure.

Here is the deal.
You CAN'T lower TA without lowering pH.
Muriatic acid lowers pH and TA.
pH will rise without any other inputs, just takes time.
ANY calculation of acid addition that exceed lowering pH by more than .4, will not be accurate.
Lower pH by .4 (use "Effects of adding" in pool math). Pump running. Test 30 minutes later. Repeat the process in .4 pH increment or less until you hit your target.

Do not pre-dilute. Turn your pump on. Pour it SLOWLY in front of a return, at least 6" out from the wall. SLOWLY is like 1/2 gallon per minute slow. Pencil thin stream. Brush a bunch in the area when you are done. ALWAYS wear eye protection. PERIOD. If you get any on your hands, just dunk them in the pool.

Handling acid is a risk. Adding in front of a return SLOWLY, and brushing immediately poses low risk to the finish. Buffering of acid is very fast in pool water. Just brush for 5 minutes, you get a workout and plaster is protected.

We recommend LESS handling of acid for personal safety over pool safety. (We NEVER risk human safety for ANY pool safety...period). Pools can be replaced, people (and their eyes etc. cannot)

You can decide to do either. The ONLY hard and fast rules...wear eye protection (PERIOD), and ALWAYS add acid to water, never the reverse.

Thank you! Just a question on why you would not pre-dilute. I have never pre-diluted acid in my plaster pool but the Pebble Tec start up says to pre-dilute. Just wondering what the pro's and con's are. Thank you again!
It’s just not necessary and adds more risk and hassle to adding acid.

Also: I’ve noticed newer folks tend to overestimate what the pH is when comparing the color chart. Feel free to post a picture of the test for a second opinion.
