New house with pool, has an aqua rite but using chlorine?

We just bought this house with a pool, previous owner said it ran on chlorine. I found bags of pool salt in shed, then looking around the filter and found and ele. box, opened and its an aqua rite salt generater. I called previous owner and told it only worked on 40k gallon pools and mine is 50k. So why have it, I found out the pool is 38k gallons but he was trying to use a 25k cell.
My question is there a way to test the generater before I go buy a new cell and salt?

Yep - we often talk about an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.
If your pool is clear, you can do the opposite, an OCGT - overnight chlorine gain test.

A working SWCG will make fine bubbles that you should see from returns.
