New heat pump

Well we have just bought a new heat pump for our above ground wooden swimming pool and wondered how people managed the cover and programming of the temperature.

At the moment we have the cover on all of the time, except when we want to use the pool. And the programme is set to 28 degrees centigrade, just between the hours of 8h30 & 20h00.

We've had 2 weeks of 'non-swimming' weather, and it seems a bit of a waste of energy! (money!) Or should we just accept the costs and get on with it.....??

Any ideas or systems you guys use would be welcome......

Debating the same thing. We have just come into winter and debating turning it off for a couple of months or leave it running. We do have beautiful winter days just not right now. I’m in two minds. On one hand it seems a waste to run constantly when there is no one swimming. On the other hand it is more efficient to leave it on and also if you get the odd day of nice weather. Leaving it on does give you the spontaneity of swimming whenever you fancy. I think I will leave kits on at least until after I’ve had my first swim.

Watch the weather forecasts, no sense heating a pool if it’s not going to be used. Pool Heat pumps are very inefficient if the ambient air is below 65 degrees.

Ours takes two days to heat the pool so for us it’s either on or off in the cold weather. Having said that we probably get 2-3 days a year where max temp doesn’t reach 18*C. Our system is very efficient, and still not bad in cold temps but no point heating if you won’t be swimming months on end. Days on end is a different story though.

Up until this point I have just let my heat pump run all the time and just keep the pool warm even if it's not nice out.

One of my projects this year is to time my heat pump in to my solar controller so it only turns on automatically if its warm enough for the solar panels to be working. If it's nice enough for the solar panels to work its nice enough to swim.

Crikey, with those temperatures I'd leave it on all year! Here in the South West of France, the season is normally June through August, but you hope to extend the season each end with the heat pump.

Incidentally, we have had the wettest winter here for 50 years!!
