New glasses but still seeing spots

First time caller, longtime listener here. We recently purchased a pool that came with a house. Neither my wife or I grew up with a pool so this is all new to us. We have these spots in areas, they poof and disappear if moved with the foot or when the manual vacuum gets near them only to return within a few hours and always are in the same spots. There are trees (pecan and pin oak) around the pool and originally thought this may have been tree junk falling and settling. I have always thought that when you had algae the water would have a green hue or something not random spots. Other than the apots the water is crystal clear. But is algae what this could be? I cannot find the add photo function but have several examples pics if anyone could share how to upload.

Welcome to the forum!

Yes - it is most likely algae.

How are you testing your water? How are you chlorinating?

Photos are getting difficult as third party hosting is being restricted. You can become a supporter of the site and get photo storage space or I have seen some use a Google site.

Take care.

Thanks mknauss ,appreciate it. The previous owner chlorinated pretty heavily with tri-chlor tabs (3"). I have done the same since 2 months ago. Through reading the forums, I imagine after a few years of this along with the shock treatment they were using (and my last two month contribution of the same) has gotten the CYA level over 100. Testing with an HTH 5 way test kit. Possibly the chlorine is not able to do its job effectively by chance? I think I may have got the photo thing worked out. Let's see if they attach.

Great. Picture looks to me to be dead algae.

You need to get a proper test kit. Best one for consumers is the TF100 from TFTestkits.net. I also suggest a SpeedStir. Makes testing even easier.

Second, you need to start using liquid chlorine (bleach). You no doubt have a large drain and refill in your future to address the CYA.
