So we just got a new filter and variable speed pump installed. I'm still seeing air come out of the jets and swirling in the pump basket. Is this really a problem? The pool is 40 years old and we're hesitant to put anymore money into it. It leaks a fair amount, which I've patched somewhat with epoxy but looks to be needing it again after one year. I'm guessing the leak is occurring somewhere not easily accessible. I can hear it sloshing around in the multiport on top of the filter too. The water is crystal clear and thanks to the information here and frequent testing, I've yet to have any problems keeping the water clean, although opening took a while with the SLAM process, but patience and persistence got me clear-ish water. Given I didn't know how old the sand filter was, we had that replaced along with the single speed pump. The water is now crystal clear, we just have the problems outlined above.

New filter: SD-80 Pentair
New pump: Pentair SuperFlo VST
Pool: Hybrid from what I can tell. Fiberglass panels with panted concrete floor. Two skimmers and a single main drain in the deep end.

A VS pump on low speed will create some air in the pump basket. It should clear if you run it at high speed for several minutes.
Lube the pump basket cap real well and ensure no debris stuck in oring groove or on face of seal.
With pump off, also check the drain plugs - there are 2 - one under pump basket and one under the impeller housing. Remove them, lube the oring and reinstall hand tight.

Do you have a diverter valve or similar valve in front of pump (suction side)? Check that for any suction side leak.
