I am a long time DIY pool owner but new to TFP. Over the last couple of months I got new plaster and new water and attempting to transition completely to the methods and approach defined here. I have stabilized most things at this point, but currently working to get my TA down to recommended levels. I have a few questions, but mostly would just appreciate confirmation/redirection/encouragement on what i am doing and any further advice.

My current test results:
FC: 5.0
pH: 7.8
TA: 100
CH: 250
CYA: 70
Salt: 3400
Temp: 71
CSI: -0.12

My questions:
1. I expect the new plaster to have high acid demand based on what i have been told and to expect. I certainly have that. But it has always been that way to an extent. I have a fountain, waterfall and a spillover that I now understands contributes to that rise above and beyond the SWCG. What I think I understand is that if I get my TA down, it will help to slow the pH rise and then "follow" more with the normal rise and adjustment of the pH. In other words, I shouldn't have to continuously be in the protocol to lower the TA? It has taken more than a week of constant measure and adjust to get it down from over 200 and I still have a ways to go. I would just like to know if it is worth the effort. BTW, my fill water tested to a TA of just 40, although pH was at 7.8.
2. Regarding the CH. New plaster recommended keeping CH at 200 for at least a month (I am beyond that now). There is very little, if any CH in my fill water. I believe I understand the rationale for all of the recommended levels now, except perhaps this one. How much energy should i put into getting CH up to the middle of the recommended levels? Does a higher CH have benefits on other values?
3. I intend to raise my CYA an additional 10ppm as things warm up. Right now I am running the SWCG @55% and easily maintaining the 5.0 FC. While it is set to adjust % and runtime seasonally, I think I understand that I could reduce the % a bit and still maintain acceptable levels. Does that make sense?

Now, if my new approach to mosquito control will work half as good as I plan, I am looking forward to the best pool season ever here ;)

TIA

C,

Your numbers look pretty good to me.. :goodjob:

I always try to maintain my "target" FC or more.. I never try to keep my FC between the minimum and the target. There is no real downside to being a little too high, but there is a huge downside if you fall below your minimum. Running a little hot means I never have to worry about going below my minimum, even if I skip a test or two..

Thanks,

Jim R.
