First, I broke ever rule I read about related to constructing an AGP. I purchased a pool kit from pool supplies that was on sale.

I agreed to have my old pool removed and new pool put up. I wanted to use my old pool and use the new pool’s “pool wall.” I was told the bottom track was rusted.

My old pool was removed, checked the placement blocks using a transit raised one block 1 inch. The sand was in racked, bottom track assembled and pool wall was rolled out. Unfortunately, the unibead liner was not laid out in the sun and stretched. The liner was hung into a J channel instead of hanging it over top of the pool wall. Water was delivered the following morning at 8 am.

Everything was going well, then all of a sudden the pool water guy yells the liner is coming out of the J channel. Four or five of us has liner in hand. One area allowed water to get over top of the liner. We stopped it before it washed out any of the blocks. We had to use duct tape to secure liner. I started siphoning off the water using my garden hose. Two days later my neighbor gives me a submersible pump and bam pool is empty. I did not have to direct water to pump. The pool bottom was level. Unfortunately I noticed they “DID NOT” create a “cove” for the liner to drop on to.

Contractor brings a guy in to build a cove. I told them I did not think it was high enough. They assured me it was. They took black coping strips and pushed them in different spots to lock the liner in place. I have another tanker of water delivered. Just about when he’s done a couple of black strips start to pop out.

Contractor thinks the liner is not the correct size. The white circular line sits on top of cove. I measured water and it’s 17” deep. On top of cove and on white circular line it measures 14”. Thus the cove is 3” high. Personally I think it should be 5 or 6 inches high.

I plan on pumping water off again, dropping liner and build up cove, this time by me. I will put my 68 yr old butt in there and do it right.

Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I will attach pictures and thank you.

First, I belonged to the old pool forums. I would have had a few comments. Most would have pointed out how dumb I am. Then they would have lent their vast knowledge to help me correct my problem.

Well after doing a lot of research, what I need to do is create a 3” sand base, thus changing level of inside the pool base to top of pool wall from 52” to 49”. Then add a 3” to 4” cove and my unibead liner will never stress the pool walls.

Hopefully this will help someone else who does the same dumb thing I did, hired an incompetent installer.

Hi and welcome to TFP! Sorry you didn’t get a timely response on your post. From experience here I can tell you that’s not typical - perhaps just bad timing with the experts on above grounds here.

It sounds like you’ve got a pretty good plan for a floor. Another key with vinyl liners is to make sure you’re installing on a hot, sunny day, and during the day. They’re designed to stretch but need that heat to do so. If the vinyl is too cold it can prevent the stretching and lead to some of what I see in your pictures.

Best of luck and don’t be afraid to post up any other questions or if you get stuck again. Also, we’d love to see pics of the finished pool when you’re done! :)
