Neglected inground pool, no chlorine, no CYA.

This is not my pool. My niece closed on a home last week that has a neglected inground pool. The pool was cleaned up 6 weeks ago, just to look good for the listing. Now it's a smelly mess! I took my test kit over and there is no CYA or Chlorine in the pool at all!! The PH is pushing 8, but I didn't take time to check the Alkilinity. There is a large sand filter, a one speed pump and a Pentair SWG. The salt measured at 4000. It's a 18,500 gallon vinyl liner pool. I'm not sure if the SWG works, but there is NO chlorine at all in the pool! I know it needs CYA and Chlorine. Are those the first things to start with?

Are those the first things to start with?

yes. Chlorine. Start 30 ppm CYA dissolving. Lower pH to 7.2
Then follow the SLAM Process

Thank you! I couldn't stand being near the pool it smelt so bad!! The realtor and seller both told my niece all she would need to do to take care of the pool was to sprinkle some salt in time to time and the sun will do the rest! I told her that was the stupidest thing I've ever heard! lol

The elevated pH tends to rule out ammonia. But you might do the protocol to check.
