It’s not about the sand “being trashed” it’s about it becoming mechanically compacted and forming channels. The channels act like low resistance pathways for the water to flow through effectively bypassing the sand. TFP recommends that sand filters be deep cleaned at least once per year to ensure that all of the fine sediment is removed and any clumps of sand are broken up. Backwashing is insufficient to the task.
