Need help with pool pump/filter

Hey guys, I’m a new pool owner and I have an issue with the pump and/ or sand filter. When I turn the pump off, it sounds like the filter drains and there is a slight hiss coming from around the valve. I have noticed that when I bleed the air out of the filter all the noise stops. However, after a few minutes the pump will lose its prime. I’ve removed all the plumbing and retapped with new Teflon and made sure (from what I can see) there are no leaks. There is a check valve located between the pool skimmer and pump basket, no other valves in the setup.

we are leaving for a few weeks soon and I won’t be able to put this on a timer when we are away so if anyone could help that would be amazing!

thanks,

Mike

Welcome to TFP Mike!

From which valve are you hearing the air hiss? To properly help you, we really need to know what type of equipment you have. Posting photographs or completing your signature will help us out.

Hey Rancho! Realized I wasn’t specific, the valve I hear this hissing is coming from the sand filter that has filter/recirculate/waste etc. once the pump is off you can hear a gurgling along with a low hiss. It definitely has an air leak somewhere as I did notice the walls of the pool had a lot of tiny air bubbles as well.

I did take the valve apart to make sure the seal is good, and didn’t see any issues.

I don't have much experience with MPVs. @1poolman1 may be able to provide some guidance with the MPV. Take a look at this article and see if it helps:

In the meantime, the pump losing prime and the lack of a water leak on the pressure side could be a suction side leak. Make sure your water level is good and clean and lube the pump basket lid seal/o-ring.

A picture or a brand and model would help tremendously. Does the pump lose prime while running? If not, let it run 24/7 while you are away. With the rest of the home not using energy it probably won't hurt your bill.
