Need advice for new AG or semi IG pool, lots of conflicting info out there ugh!

In light of the fact that it is summer and HOT, we had a wonderful experience with our Intex inflatable ring pools. We would buy the 10' diameter one for $49.99 and spent 4-5 months of the year in it. Not trying to talk you out of it, but that might be a way to get you in a pool now, and then you could work on your other pool as time/heat permits and you won't have to be in a rush.

I am mid-way through the install of an inground vinyl, and I can see no reason why not to just get an inground vinyl and only bury it a couple feet. You can build a retaining wall around the exterior, finish the backfill with gravel, and pour a little 36" deck and have a nice "semi-unground" pool.

Thank you for responding! We actually do have a small 10 foot round pool that we purchased last year. I think we can maybe get one more year out of it, it had damage from roots last year (lessons learned the hard way) and always felt like we were swimming in a bathtub but it was wet and it worked! The new pool will be for behind our home remodel that we will be completed in about 4 weeks (or so the contractor says lol). I am not anti smaller pool, just looking for one we have been planning for two years.
Going the inground vinyl route is not out of the question. It would greatly change the dynamic of the excavation but is worth looking at as an option. If you are chronicling your process, could you link it?

I don't think it would change much about the excavation, but may require some additional things for stability (such as a concrete collar), but I would imagine that would really just add to the longevity and durability of the pool.

My thread:
DIY (mostly) inground vinyl 16x36

Kinda what I had in mind. This is just an oval steel wall inground pool that they left up a couple feet, and built a little wall around. I have suggested this same thing to my sister, they have a steep slope in their backyard, and trying to dig the entire thing out would be a nightmare, but doing it kind of like this would make sense

Thank you for sharing your thread, I had seen it when I was lurking the forums. It looks like it will be amazing!!

I guess by changing the excavation I am thinking of a 2.5 ft deep hole vs one that is quite deeper.
If we go with a pool that is strong enough to be semi IG, I might be able to avoid having to have a retention wall. The picture is exactly what I want to have when it is done, and then I would put decking around it

I don’t know anything about the type of pool you are interested in, but I do want to strongly caution you against pushing to get something done on an artificial timeline. Your chances of making regrettable mistakes climb astronomically under those conditions. Take your time and think everything through. There really is no rush.

I wish I had discovered this site in time for someone to give me this advice at the time I needed it.

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your response and very wise advice. Although I have been looking into the pool for quite some time (about a year), the information given to me in just the last month has caused me great concern. This site has been a blessing for sure, especially due to people like yourself who are so kind to help. I have actually determined to go with an AG and that decision has gotten rid of a lot of my concerns. While I do still have a few questions that seem to get varying answers, I am reading the Pool School and the forum posts. I am hopeful that between those and any responses to my thread I can clear those up. We are going to another pool dealer this weekend as well to see more options.

Thanks!!
