Nature 2 versus salt generator

Hey there. I was using a nature two after being told that my above ground pool, because of the metal, salt would cause corrosion and that you could keep your chlorine at .5 parts per million rather than a higher level with nature 2 or salt. I hear that it can cause staining but my main question is it true that you can use less chlorine with salt or a nature two or not? Also is it true that you don't need to use a salt generator with an above ground pool? I would love to use less chlorine if at all possible though I know you need some level of chlorine regardless of your system

Nothing you have been told is correct.

Salt water pools DO NOT CORRODE things any more than the water itself corrodes things.

The level of chlorine is set by your CYA level, there is no " set it at .5" in proper pool care.

If you have a device that deploys a tent over the pool, you can use less chlorine.

If not, you'll lose up to 5ppm to the sun each day being so far south. If you start at 2, you're going to have a bad time.

Firstly, of course: Welcome to TFP!

Acidic water is many many times more corrosive to metal and damaging to liners and equipment than salt. It just so happens that the trichlor chlorine tablets used by the Nature 2 system is extremely acidic. So the chance of corrosion is actually more of a concern with any system that uses trichlor tablets.

And from personal experience moving from a mineral system (Pool Frog) to TFPC, the improvement in water feel, look, and ease of maintenance is incredible.
