Narrow Access for dig

Has anyone ever heard of using a crane to lift in a normal size excavator, when the property access points are extremely narrow? We could get a super small bobcat in there, but it will take much longer and probably require renting conveyor system. Friend who is in construction said it would be easy to do. Thanks.

When they did my pool they used a mini excavator. The body lifted and the tracks retracted under it to allow it to pass through a 48" space. Then the tracks spread back out and the cab drops back between them. That unit and small bobcats were used because of the limitations of my lot. There was a "limited access" upcharge added to my price quote, but surprisingly that only added about $1500 to my total pool cost.

I had under about 60". When I got quotes all the builders wanted $7000-$9000 extra to build the pool without at least 6 feet. I ended up building it myself. I know someone that has a rental equipment business so I called him and gave him the measurements and he dropped off the largest mini excavator and skid-steer I could fit. The mini excavator rubbed the gate post a bit and it took 10 minutes t get from driveway to backyard but it only went in and out twice (had to fill up with fuel) I made a lot of trips with the skid-steer and it was like threading a needle to get around 2 gas meters and the neighbors air conditioner but we had a 15000 gallon pool fully excavated in a weekend. How much space do you have? If it is super tight then determine the wet weight of the excavator you want to use and call around to find out the cost for a crane to come out and do a lift. Of course you will need to double that and factor in the cost of the conveyor and extra equipment. I know a guy who had to have a crane to lift the excavator in and crane out all of the dirt. I never asked how much it cost him to have the pool built.
