My pump died some help with options

Hi,

My old 3/4 horse single speed Hayward Superpump finally bit the dust (the motor completely seized we knew it was coming by the sound it was making). I am looking at upgrading it to a 1 h/p dual speed Hayward Superpump. We were happy with the performance and its impeller section is identical in size to our old one so no need for new plumbing). Now my pump control currently is just an analog timer switch. When I upgrade do I need to install any newer control options? I can't find anything online, most people seem to already have newfangled digital controls when they upgrade to these options. Also I already have a 220 20a circuit this is going in(yay for previous owner over sizing the circuit).

You should look at a Hayward Super Pump VS. it is a variable speed pump that has a built in time clock. You can set the pump to go on or off at certain times during the day and you can adjust it to different speeds. It also saves you money on electricity. Buy this before you buy a 2 spd pump. The ports line up with no major plumbing changes.

If it is a single speed pump you are replacing with a single speed pump you shouldn't need to do anything other than hook it up to your existing wiring. The timer you have should work fine.

Another option to consider is rebuilding the fried pump. Google electric motor repair in your town. Most of the time it is around $100 or less.

If you can swing the dual speed I would, you should recoup your money in one or two seasons. Plus at low speed the pump is much quieter.

I guess my actual question is missed, is there anything additional I will need for the dual speed? i.e. a pump controller or some kind of digital controller. I couldn't find any information on how it toggles between high speed and low speed.

I did miss that, sorry. Most use a light switch to toggle between speeds unless they have some form of automation. I believe there are some timers that are set up to run the pump on low speed for X time and then high speed for X time.

During my recent search for a new VS pump i did look at the dual speeds as well. The Superpump model numbers ending in "S" have a manual switch on the back of the motor. If you go with the non-manual switch pump you will need, at a minimum, another analog timer. Or you could purchase something like the Intermatic PE153.

Thank you for your responses. That answered my question perfectly. After doing some more research. We decided to spend a little extra money and go with the SP2603VSP (the 220 Superpump VS). I was hoping for something a little automated also after researching the cost savings it should pay for itself in 2-3 seasons.
