My First Pool Kit….Builder Edition

So I know how much we all love pictures. Here are few from the other day.

These two breakers were feeding the salt cell and the Intelliflo3. The hots ran down to a pigtail….

IMG_8856.jpeg
The hot conductor in my hand was feeding the salt cell (I split the pigtail as soon as I discovered it). The black hots behind it were feeding the Intelliflo3. The salt cell was configured for 120v. The 3HP Intelliflo3 as we all know will only run on 240. I have no idea how the Intellichlor didn’t blow up in this arrangement. Dumb luck? If you look closely behind my hand, you see a white neutral conductor with a wire nut on it. I wonder where it goes….
IMG_8858.jpeg
Oh my….this appears to be an abandoned neutral in the Intelliflo3 terminal box. I guess we needed a real world confirmation the pump won’t run on 120. But hey at least it passed inspection wired for 120…..🤦‍♂️

And the panel after I tidied everything up and installed GFCI breakers for both pumps, the lights, and the SWG. How it passed inspection with only 1 GFCI breaker I have no idea.

I think I would forward pics of it all including the inspection sticker and ask the code folks why they think this was passed. I'd share the contractor name with them too.
My assumption is that when inspection took place, it was wired for 120v. It would have passed in that configuration. Then after final when the contractor realized the pump wasn’t working, this mess happened to get the pump to work. As for the lack of GFCI breakers, I can’t explain that one. Inspector was asleep? At this point “powder is being kept dry” for the owner as I’m documenting and correcting. It’s their decision to act legally or otherwise against any and all responsible parties if you catch my drift 😉.

Todays excitement…

IMG_8874.jpeg

A bulkkhead fitting started leaking. The pool was run for barely 4 months last season and put to bed. I opened it Monday. Deadline for swimmers in the water is the 15th, plus I’m stacked with 2 a day openings this week and service on about 10 accounts already opened. It’s gonna be a nailbiter to get this pool right before opening. I think little sleep is in my future….😂

Get your popcorn and a strong adult beverage. At this point this one is getting comical. 🤣 The filter bulkhead is repaired and the pool is as happy as it can be with it’s undersized SWG. Unfortunately until the Intellichem system is installed, I’m having to supplement the production of the SWG with trichlor. That’s ok, as I need to raise the CYA some anyway.

Fired the bubbler pump and found it was leaking at the pressure side union.

IMG_8884.jpeg

Not sure why one would install 3/4 of an o-ring in the union but I don’t believe they degrade quickly enough under normal use that it should be in that condition after one season of use. I suspect damage during installation.

Oddly I noticed this when really scouring the pad. Looks like a broken valve handle from a high quality $3 Everbuilt valve.

IMG_8885.jpeg

But why is it there? All the valves are intact….🤔

IMG_8864.jpeg

This main drain feed is shared between the bubbler pump and main circulating pump. Because of the lack of a check valve on the bubbler pump, when the pump shuts down, the main circ pump draws back through the bubbler pump and both end having trouble priming. Until I can install a proper check valve and blowout port arrangement, I’ll just shutoff the main drain to the main circ pump….

IMG_8886.jpeg

Oh! Think the fence is a little close? This explains the broken handle bits…..I guess it’s a good thing Everbuilt valves are only $3. When you break the handle on the fence, you can afford to buy a new valve, use the handle and throw the rest of the valve away! 🤣

To cap todays installment, the builder left his calling card on the fence…

Is Chico a female dog because he only installed 3/4 of an o-ring on the Superflo pump or because he broke the Everbuilt handle on the fence and cost Builder Bob $3?…..you decide. 😱
