We just opened the pool for the season and when I turn the pump on water started pouring out of the heater. As I have no free time at the moment I called my friends pool guy and has just told me that it is a break at the sensors with the intake and the outtake both pipes and he doesn't know what it looks like on the inside of the heater. Our heater is 25 years old and not sure if it's worth it to try and fix it or if we should buy a new one. At the same time we ever placed an AC system in the house, new siding and our walkway, so this is already been a very expensive season.
Daughter teaches swim lessons from our home pool so kind of need to get some sort of heat in our Massachusetts pool thoughts? We don't plan on being here for more than 10 years. Any good deals or any options that you can think of would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to TFP.

It's likely cracked pipes due to freezing. I doubt it will be worthwhile repairing it.

You had a 125K BTU Heat Pump and probably need the same size.

Do you have the ability to DIY an HP installation? If not, you need to call around your area and see what HPs are available.

I had the pool guy here, he reworked the pipes for now to bypass the HP. I could theoretically install one myself as the setup is pretty straight forward from the looks of the one I have currently. If it will save thousands I'm happy to diy it. But no places retail around here stock the low end only the super high end items. (In my past searches for other things)
This pool guy said they usually use Hayward brand.

See where you can buy Aquacal, Gulfstream, or Built Right Heat Pumps.

You had a good run with your Hayward Heat Pumps and may want to get another one if it will last for another 25 years.

My husband is now refusing to buy a new HP. He said that he doesn't use it. LOL
I may have to take a crack at opening it up and seeing if it is repairable at all. I know the pool guy said it could be hours of trial and error... And at $175/hr that can add up fast. Especially if it can't be fixed in the end. Fingers crossed it's just the pipes and not any of the sensors!! Just what I needed is another project. But I must have a warm pool!

You will find the water pipe is intertwined with the refrigerant pipes. Unless you have an EPA certificate and the tools to evacuate the refrigerant you can’t repair much.

Maybe you will be lucky and the cracked pipe will be past the refrigerant area.
