We had mustard algae. I read about a product on the TFP from a pool owner who was tired of fighting with it and thought the product worked well. The product did work well and got rid of it. However, it has returned. Now I am trying to get rid of it just the good ole SLAM way. When I plug in my CYA number to the calculator and touch results, I get; CYA Level 50 CYA SLAM 20. Does this mean I should get the CYA down to 20 before SLAM begins?

What specific product did you add to your water and how much did you add?
Product name YELLOW GONE. I don't remember the exact amount. It was about 2 weeks ago, I think it was about a cup. 5 minutes after putting it in then I added 2.5 ads of HTH Shock. 12 hours later I added the same HTH. 24 hours later the same HTH. This seemed to have cured the problem until yesterday.

I was just wondering does that calculator mean I should get CYA down to 20 before beginning SLAM ? I'm not using anymore of that stuff. Just straight liquid Chlorine at 10.5% The pool is 17,500 gallon round. PH is at 7.5 and chlorine 8. I have not added anything yet today. Night test of chlorine revealed about a 1 drop maybe a 2 in level. Hard to tell exact with the color range being 5-10. Thanks for your reply and time.!

Well good, that brand is just ammonia. It didn't do anything to cure your problem, but unlike other versions it only temporarily messed up your water chemistry. Nobody of any repute here would have told you to add that to your water...

As for your question: What the calculator is telling you is that to perform the SLAM Process you need to maintain your FC at a level while you follow the process. However, you do need an adequate test kit to perform the process and it doesn't sound like you're working with one. Here's a bit of information on the ones capable of handling the task at hand, I think you'll find it a lot easier to know what your FC with that than the kit you are using now: Test Kits Compared My personal pick is the TF-100, but other people love the SmartStir that comes with the Pro and the k-2006 is available from other retailers if that's a concern.

Well you're most of the way there, you just need to supplement it with the FAS-DPD chlorine test: FAS/DPD Chlorine Test Kit

Oh, and your DPD test isn't telling you that the chlorine is between 5 and 10, the number on the left is if you are using chlorine and the number on the right is if you are using bromine. Since you're not using bromine you just ignore the number on the right.

Ok, reading the left number for chlorine my FC is somewhere above a 5.
Sorry, I don't understand how that number fits into the TFP's CYA calculator showing "CYA level 50 CYA SLAM level 20"

Hello.
I am asking any knowledgable person to please tell me what this CYA calculator answer means. Does it mean I should obtain the SLAM LEVEL of 20 before beginning SLAM? Or is this where it should be after SLAM?
Thanks in advance for anyone offering help. Im battling mustard algae and it seems to win most of the time.

I need to have a CYA level of 20 before I begin SLAM?
Be sure to first ensure the pH is between 7.2-7.5. Once that is confirmed, yes, increase (and maintain) the FC of 20 until you pass all 3 SLAM criteria.

What size are the reagent bottles?

If they are 0.75 oz, you may be best served by getting a TF-Pro test kit.
If they are larger, maybe get the K-1515 FAS-DPD test to add to the present kit.

The TF-Pro comes with the electronic stirring device (makes testing easier and more consistent) and more of the reagents we , as residential pool owners, use most.
