Must I cover my AG for winter?

New owner, first pool. I looked for any obvious answer on this site and still have a few lingering questions.
We live where the pool will likely freeze solid as do the small ponds and shallow lakes (45th * north). We have skimmed out all debris and leaves and the water is clear. Previous owner told me he gave up on winter covers years back as he saw no reason to cover as long as no debris can get in the pool. We have a huge open area around the pool and little chance of anything gathering on the surface. Must I cover?? Any other's just leave it open?
T.I.A for any advise!

Most people cover their pool to keep out debris. Where I live my neighbors tree drops a ton of leaves so my pool would become a sludgy, green mess. However if you don't have any trees near you or debris it should be fine to keep uncovered. Just be aware though if you get a few hot and sunny days some of your chlorine will be used. Make sure you close your pool late say october and open early like in april maybe.

Thanks! I feel better already. I cleaned out every bit of debris last weekend and still have a clean pool after 7 days. Jumped in with a pair of chest waders to remove the ladder yesterday and I stuck me...first time in my new pool! A little chlli on the legs, water must be right around freezing as we are seeing temps in the 20's at night and highs in the 40's. I'll check the chem levels this week but I would think we are good with the low temps!
