I'm trying to figure why my inground pool is leaking water. i closed it about 6 weeks ago and its losing lots of water. I'm never sure what setting to put the multiport into for closing. I currently have a hayward 48sq ft DE filter that i installed 2 years ago. I have it set to recirculate. they pool was built in 1976 and i have had the hose for 4 years. the pool did not seam leak at all suring the summer, so im hoping that the leak is due to something being improperly set. the water is below the returns and the light so it must be leaking out of the drains of the wall. also there are some valves that in the past i always closed but this year i did not, not even sure wha they do. in any case if the water does no lead on recirculat when the pool is open it should not leak when it closed. does anyone have an ideas.

Welcome to TFP! In your case, with the water already below the skimmer, light, and return jets. the possibilities are limited. Since water can't get to your equipment pad other than the main drain (perhaps), that would leave the drain or the pool shell somewhere. If your filter uses a multiport valve with a sequence of settings like THIS ONE, you would place the valve on "Winter". But water from the pool shouldn't be getting to the filter/valve anyways unless it is coming from the drain. You could look for a pipe that returns to the pool pump from the pool with a valve that should be closed just in case. Like Steve H mentioned above, some pics may help. By now your water is probably too cold to swim to check for leaks inside the shell, so if you confirm no water is getting out from the main drain, you may just have to watch the water level to see where it stops to determine where the leak is.
