Maytronics Dolphin DX 6 vs. Polaris P945 / 955

Hi There!

We are getting a robot and can't wait!!

Pool specs:
16x37
Freeform
Concrete from the 50s
Ledge 2 ft under water line
Operational from mid-May to mid-Sept
Quite a bit tree debris


We've narrowed it down to:

Maytronics Dolphin DX 6 --- recommended by our pool service person

Polaris P945 / 955 --- recommended by two local pool shops, but they only sell Polaris


Our neighbour has the DX 6 and has been using it for 4+ years. No complaints

Person recommending Polaris says that life span is approximately 5-6 with the P45.

We are leaning towards the Polaris as we think the filter basket is easier to keep clean and maintain vs. the bag system on the Dolphin.

I'm not sure what's available in Canada, but the Polaris model numbers you show are old ones. The complete Polaris lineup now is:

Of the Maytronics units out there, I just got a Dolphin M400 a couple of weeks ago, and like it. The Dolphin DX6 filter is located on the bottom of the unit, I believe. On the M400/M500 the filters are accessible from the top...a better design, IMHO. I'm not sure on this point, but I believe the DX6 doesn't have the third brush on the bottom, whereas the M400/M500 have it. This third brush is the reason I got the M400, as the DX4 I had before used to spin around for several minutes on the main drains...the M400 cruises right over them.

I would have bought the Polaris 9650iQ, but didn't feel as confident the unit wouldn't get hung up on the main drains. The Polaris has a couple of features that make it compelling....the Remove from Water feature, where it moves to the nearest side of the pool, empties itself of water, and waits for you to pick it up. (Much lighter than lifting the M400 out of the pool). And I like the filter design of Polaris a bit better...

But, as I said, I'm happy with the M400 (which has a 3 year warranty, vs 2 for the Polaris).

For anyone in the market for a new robot, I can now confirm the 4WD Polaris models, at least the 9650iQ, is able to consistently overcome our drains without issue. Ran first 2.5 hr cleaning cycle today and it didn’t get stuck once. This has never happened with our Dolphin Z5. Didn’t think it was even possible.
