I’m reading that the flow switch is a safety mechanism and not meant to be the primary means of shutting off the generator?
Correct. The generator should not be powered when the pump is off.
can I theoretically just shut the swg off when my pump is scheduled to not be running..?
See James' post on the Intermatic T104. You can use a separate timer for the SWG or share one with the pump. If you are not comfortable with pool electrical, have an electrician that works with pools do it. Pools and electricity are not to be played with willy nilly

Hi, new pool owner here. My aquarite also kept flashing low salt and inspect cell. I repeatedly reset it thinking I was doing something wrong. Turns out all it wanted was for my temp to be at 70 and for another bag of salt to be put into the pool. My salt is now up to 2800 and all the lights are not on anymore.
