Low Pressure in Jandy Cartridge Filter

I have a Jandy CV460 Cartridge Filter. I am having an issue with low pressure. I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but it started after we had a big storm last week. I had a very large amount of pine needles get into the pool, skimmers, and pump basket. I finally have the pool nearly clean. This morning, I cleaned the cartridges, since I thought there would be a lot of debris in them. The filter pressure is hovering around 5 PSI (it's usually around 20). I'm not sure if it's related, but the water in the pump basket looks odd. It's kind of swirling and hitting up against the glass. I don't normally see that as far as I know. It's usually much quieter, and sometimes, I don't even see water in there. Before I call out my pool company, I just wanted to see if this is something that I could fix.

What is the return to the pool like? Normal? Weak?

I would suspect you have a plug of material between your pool and pump. Not completely plugged, but restricting your suction. That would cause the pump basket to look odd and you to have reduced filter pressure.

Good luck.

I just checked the returns, and they seem weak. One of them is kind of bubbling. It looks like the water is stopping and starting. I just cleaned the pump basket again, and there were a large amount of needles. They weren't there when I initially cleaned the basket this morning. The pressure is still low.

As suspected you have a partial plug between your pump and pool. You can see if it clears itself (sounds like it is trying with more needles in the basket). You can turn off the pump and pull the basket and place a hose into the suction line and see if you force the needles back towards the pool. Depending on how packed into the line they are that might work. Or you might have to get something called a 'Drain King' that expands in the pipe and puts more force in to pushing out the plug of needles.

If you feel that the line is no longer plugged from the pool to the pump, the impeller of the pump may be clogged with the needles (they might get past the pump basket). If so, you must disconnect the pump from power (turn off the breaker to the pump) and then pull the pump basket. You should be able to feel the impeller and see if anything is stuck in it.

Good luck.
