Looking to replace a massively oversized single speed pump…very confused

I have a 5000 gallon traditional AGP with no bells and whistles (one skimmer, one return, not even a chlorine feeder). The pump that came with the pool (which came with the house) is an old Hayward Power Flo LX 1.5hp pump. According to the label, it pumps 70gpm and uses 12a/115v. The filter is a Hayward 100lb, 1.4ft^2 sand filter with a 35gpm design flow rate. 1.5” fittings and about 18’ of flexible hose total.

I pay $.17/kWh, run this ~1.4kW pump 12 hours per day, so over a five month season pay about $425 in electricity.

Would it be worth the cost savings over 2-3 years to switch to a VS pump, and if so, how do I go about sizing and selecting one? I’ve tried to do some research but find myself confused by both Hayward and Pentair’s product lines. Any specific suggestions please? Many thanks.

Just for how quiet they are... a VSP is the way to go. With a short swim season, you should consider a Calimar 3hp VSP if you can find one. Many here have one, very inexpensive and will get the job done.

For reference, I run 24/7 on my Intelliflo for about 190 watts per hour.
