Good day!
After fighting with my pool last year, I drained the sludge out of it this year, and starting fresh. I have excellent well water. From my reading, I assume that my cya was too high last year as I used the pucks.

This year, I am trying the bleach method, and keeping the pucks for when I am away.

I do not have the fancy test kit yet, but it has been ordered. Just using the strips for now.

I need to add cya to my pool, as there is zip all in there. Is this the correct stuff to use?

Welcome to TFP!

That does look like the right stuff. Ideally, it should be labeled "100% cyanuric acid."

Which test kit were you able to get?

Pro tip: Before adding CYA, wait for an accurate measurement from your test kit. Adding too much will require a water exchange.

Thank you!
Taylor k-1005. Won't be here until the 15th or so.

I will not add too much of the stuff. I am fairly certain that there is none, as our water isn't treated. Though I will be draining it partially as soon as the weather turns, my return gasket looks like it is finished and needs to be replaced.

I missed in your first post where you said you started fresh. If you did a 100% water exchange and you haven't added CYA or used dichlor or trichlor, then, your right, you have "zip" in your well water. Go ahead and add 30 ppm of chlorine stabilizer using the sock method.

This is the test kit that I ordered. Correct one?

The pool is very lightly used. I am the only swimmer, and I don't use lotions or oils.

And yes, I completely drained and mopped the pool, then refilled with untreated water from our well.

Nope. Here are recommended kits...Link-->Test Kits Compared

You can get on of them on amazon.ca (Link-->Amazon.ca) You can order a test kit from the US / TFTestkits.nt from the US and deliver to a po box close to the border and go pick it, if you are close to the border. You will need one of these test kits to safely perform the SLAM process. There are workarounds to get it cheaper...Link--> Yet another, Test Kits in Canada Thread

Ugh, I see the difference now. The one I ordered does dpd, the other does fas and dpd. When I read the article about which test, it looked to me like the k-1005 would work, and that it was simply a smaller kit. Residential instead of professional.
I am not close to the border, unfortunately. I will probably have to make do with the one I ordered. The k-2005 is a very steep price for me. The one I ordered was pushing it...

For now, just keep your CYA at 30 ppm. Your FC comparator test will work up to 5 ppm so you should be able to maintain FC according to the chart. We know how hard it is to get Taylor test kits up in Canada.
