Hey all so getting ready to end out my second season with my 22'x54" above ground pool and I'm doing a lot of studying to try to be more prepared for next summer. So first off next season will be my first going with chlorine, these past 2 summers I tried two different brands of biguanide. First year I did soft swim and this summer I tried baquacil. First year was garbage, I blame the pool store I put too much trust in and they happily took my money. This season I was going to go chlorine but I was talked into trying going thru a different pool store. This year was much better than the first, I spent a fraction of the money on chemicals but at the same time the water was never 100% clear.
My first task is finding a new filter system. I believe a majority of my headaches came from my pump and filter. The one that came with the pool is a intex sand filter but I'm not sure if it's too small for the pool or what it only holds about 40 pounds of sand and on top of that the clear plastic leaf catcher lid before the pump cracked and had to be replaced 3 times. So I'm looking for a recommendation on a pump and sand filter that would be good for that size pool.
Thanks for taking the time to read and thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Filters are one of those bigger the better kinda things. Can’t go too big. Depending on budget and how long you plan to keep the pool a cartridge filter is highly recommended.

Switching to chlorine will be way simpler than the baquacil.

A 22 foot round pool that is 48 inches deep (water level for a 54 inch wall) is approximately 11,400 gallons.

It may be best to do the Baqua conversion with the present filter (if it's sufficient to do the conversion) and then toss the old filter when done.
That being said, a cartridge filter in the 300-400 sq ft or larger range will work well.

Here's a link to the 'how-to' on converting from Baquacil to chlorine

We also have an entire forum dedicated to Baquacil and it's 'issues'.

Is a cartridge filter better than sand?

I had a large sand filter for over 20 years.
Switched to a cartridge almost 2 years ago when I rebuilt my pad, replaced pump and added a SWG.

The sand filter developed a pin hole leak in the vessel. It was just a matter of time before it got worse.
I like the large cartridge filter better as I only need to clean it yearly.
