posting for my brother in law in Ft. McMurray Alberta.

new build in fall of 2020, didn't over winter well. had a hole in the liner (patched), and lost 1 of 2 skimmer lines.
However, 2nd skimmer and jets hold pressure well.

The problem is he's losing about 4" water a day, up to a certain level. Meaning he doesnt continually lose it, it stops after it goes down about 4". When he tops it up he loses it again. He also told me his basement sump is running 24/7 while he's losing the pool water.

he has triple checked the seal on the stairs and the skimmer baskets. he says they are intact. He believes it is his lights. I felt this makes no sense... reason being is the water never gets down as low as the lights. He argued that a backpressure might be built up after so much water loss. He is planning to pump the water out below the lights and silicone them. He says that the installer did remark that there was no gasket or seal that would prevent leakage, but he doesnt know if this was resolved before the water was added and his installer is not reachable.

apparently the water loss stops once it reaches the bottom of the skimmer openings, even if he plugs the skimmer lines.

is there any place you think he may be overlooking and what do you think about his theory about his lights?

Generally speaking, where the water stops dropping is the location(s) of the leak. So if the water stops falling with the lights still underwater, it's not the lights. But the skimmer does sound like a potential problem area. You might post back with his pool details (much like a signature) and also a pic or two of the pool and skimmer or areas at the dropped waterline. Maybe we'll see something more to help. Here's our leak detection link in case you haven't seen it yet.
