Just getting ready to compact for the pavers. We have tons - literally - of paving stones. More than enough to make a complete ring. Would this be overkill? I don't mind the extra work, but if it's not worth it...
The support posts are what really needs the support base/pavers. The tracks "should" be stable on the ground and secured between the posts. I don't see where it would hurt anything if you wanted to slip an extra paver or two between posts, but like the support pavers, be careful because you don't want those pavers to pinch the liner.
The bottom of the pool will have interlocking foam pads trimmed to fit inside, so pinching shouldn't be a problem. Putting a layer of felt on top of the pads for a bit more cushion and reduce the appearance of the seams on the pads, which will be taped as well.
Try to snap a pic or two of the project as it progresses so we can see it here on the forum. We like to share clean set-ups and use them as a benchmark for others to follow. No pressure.
