Our pump motor got fried (lightning?) and it took a month to get the replacement, so no filtering and lots of leaves have created a serious algae problem. I'm the one who makes sure the chemistries are OK, but I'm at a loss about how to fix this. The pool guy (who we've relied on for years & has always provided us with good advice) said we will need to add 15-20 bags of shock. I've added 14 bags, but there's got to be a procedure to make this successful, because the pool is still green. Is there a list of steps to follow? Our pool is gunnite,; we normally using salt cell to create chlorine. I have taken the Hayward filter apart & cleaned the algae from the fins, but I know that the algae will be deposited on the fins again. Suggestions, please?

You’ll be cleaning the filters until the SLAM is complete. It’s a process and not a one time quick fix. If it’s as bad as you indicate it may take weeks to clear. Fortunately, your in the low UV period which will help. Follow the process as much as you can. It works.
