Just filled up new water, now what?

We are first time pool owners in Phoenix and I guess did everything wrong this year. We drained the pool and pressure washed and got all the black algae off. My question is now what? I don't want to mess it up again.
Someone said get the water to CYA 30ppm, PH 7.1 and SLAM. Does that sound right?

Lessons learned : Stay away from the chloride pucks and use chlorine only. Our CYA was through the roof so I am hoping we can do better this year.

You are correct in that you need a minimum CYA of 30. That's probably fine to start with this time of year. SLAM? I don't see a need since you did a complete drain and clean. If you have any concerns about residual algae, you can do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test to see if anything is lingering in the plumbing or filter system. If you pass the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test and see no signs of algae, just maintain your FC according to the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]. That is an important tool. As for the pH, we recommend a pH of 7.2 before starting a SLAM, but if you don't need to SLAM, then just keep the pH around 7.5. Definitely use regular/plain bleach to maintain the FC and you should do much better.
Adding CYA:
To increase CYA via granular stabilizer, place the required amount as calculated by the Poolmath calculator into a white sock and place in the poolside skimmer basket. For those concerned about suction flow to the pump, suspending the sock near a return jet or from a floating device will also suffice. Best never to allow undissolved granules to rest directly against the pool surface. Squeeze the sock periodically to help it dissipate. Once dissolved, consider your CYA adjusted to that programmed (target) level. CYA test readings should show a rise in 24-48 hours, however some pools may experience a longer delay to fully register. Best to confirm final CYA in about 5-7 days before adding any more stabilizer/conditioner.
