Jandy Cartridge Filter Lifespan

Since the pool was installed in 2013 I was intent on it having the best care possible and continued with the company who built it with 'Valet' service. My warrantees would not be valid unless i at least used them to open and close the pool for 5 years. There have been extreme fluctuations including unswimmable toxicity during their service. There have been what I think are calcium flakes appearing even after they have just left for weekly maintenance. They have said they are bringing something to cut down the alkalinity, but why did it just appear this year ? (They forgot the cyanuric acid when they opened the pool as well.) I am concerned about the effects of these fluctuations on the equipment.
Having replaced an air release valve and 4 filter cartridges last year - they are saying I need new ones again !
My pool is mostly covered and kept very clean of debris.
I am looking forward to Pool School and having a better understanding and control.
Thank you.

You should not need filters every year. My father in law has the same filter you do and his cartridges last 5-7 years and he opens to a swamp each year.

Best place to start reading is ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry. Get your self a proper test kit like the TF100 XL, I bought mine from TFtestkits.com. Others on here really like the Taylor k2006c. Which ever one you buy get the magnetic speed stir. I didn't get it with mine and regretted it.
