Hello. We are in the process of getting our pool built. Our contract states the PB will install a Jandy iAqualink Z4 automation system. Is there any advantages to upgrading to the iAqualink RS system? We switched to a AquaPure 1400 SWCG so it is my understanding they will need to add a power pack to the Z4 system. Is the difference in the amount of actuator relays? The Z4 has 4 whereas the RS has many models that allow more and more AUX relays. The ChemLink ORP/pH Interface can also be added to the RS (not the Z4). Is this feature worth it? If so that would be worth the upgrade right there.

We have a pool, spa, slide and waterfall/grotto. Not exactly sure how many AUX relays we would need to utilize. Probably 4 if our PB was giving us the Z4 model.

This is all so confusing to newbies. Trying my hardest to figure everything out before we are stuck with whatever they install. ;)

Holli,

You've got it figured out. The basic difference is the z4 has very limited ability to expand beyond basic pool controls. With it you can control 3 valves which gives you the ability to switch the intake, return, and solar heater. That's all you normally need. You can also control 4 relays that switch power on and off for features like the main pump, a booster or air pump for the bubbler for the spa, plus a water feature or LED lights. If you want to expand you'll need to upgrade to an rs and buy a separate box to house it. The Z4 has it's weather proof box included. Here are a couple of other things you'll want to know:

  • Your breakers for each of the devices will be in a separate sub panel. If you want the option to expand have the PB install a larger sub panel with more amperage and empty slots for more breakers. This can be expensive to add later on and your old box will be discarded. Make sure they pull the larger wire so you can add capacity otherwise you'll have to rewire later on... another expensive adder later on.
  • iAqualink 2.0 is superb and it's compatible with the z4 as well as the rs. It gives you waaay better control over the LED lights. You can eliminate the need for a wall control inside the house as any cell phone or laptop with wifi can now control your pool. We are often out for dinner or something and decide we want to heat up the spa so it's ready when we get home... very spoiled now.
  • You can also control a solar water heater or a standard water heater with the z4.
  • There are several different models for both the z4 and the rs. These are for pool only, spa only, pool and spa, PDA remote instead of iAqualink(can't imagine why anyone would want this). The rs system also has several models with different numbers of additional relays.
  • For the rs models you can have a separate wall mounted box for the breakers like the Z4 or you can get a load center with the breakers at the bottom and the control board at the top.

I went with the rs because we plan to add several additional features. I also went with the combined load center to simplify the installation and reduce he number of boxes on the wall.

I hope this helps.

Chris
