Is this normal for quartz surface??

We recently had our pool resurfaced -- product is Finest Finish, Sparkle Quartz series. We are at the end of the start-up period and the surface is extremely splotchy. There are many areas - both large and small - that are much lighter in color. It appears those spots/sections do not have any of the quartz material - just smooth plaster.

Our installer says this is perfectly normal and pool plaster should only be viewed "under full sun with pool running". Even under those conditions, the splotchiness is visible. In the pic, spots are most visible in upper right corner of pool. Without sun, it looks way worse.

Is this splotchiness normal for a quartz finish?

The short answer is no. If care is taken on install, it should be a nice even color. It happens, and a lot of pools don't turn out perfect, but a lot of splotchy-ness should not appear in any plaster based finish. In areas where there is no aggregate showing, they simply didn't get good exposure, so you have the plaster base (or cream) covering it up. That also should not be the case, but a nice even exposure everywhere. Sorry you have this, but it doesn't sound encouraging that he wants to address it. I don't agree that this is perfectly "normal."

Some of that splotchiness when not in full sun is reflections and shadows from trees and clouds. If the pool finish looks uniform in full sun then it might be. Our pool is much more splotchy when it is cloudy or overcast. The areas that have less quartz exposed can be acid washed to remove more plaster and expose more aggregate.

Amy-what color did you chose? We are also deciding on a quartz finish now and it is stressful.

I agree - it was VERY stressful! We received little guidance from the pool company and choosing from pictures of pools that we liked did not work out as we had hoped. The color is Laguna. Pretty, but a bit lighter than we had anticipated. Good luck!
