is the inline filter necessary on cleaner?

I have a polaris 280 pool cleaner. I've never had so much as a piece of grass in the inline filter (coming from the jet to the cleaner). Now there's a little crack in it. Can I just remove the whole inline filter assembly? It doesn't seem to serve any purpose.

That filter is there to protect the cleaner from getting jammed up by any debris.
But, if your cleaner line is plumbed in after you main pool filter, then it would be very unlikely for any debris to make it to the cleaner.
But, if the cleaner line is plumbed between the pump and filter, then debris could get to the cleaner.

If you have never found anything in that inline filter, then I think you have your answer and accept the very low risk ;)
