Our pool is fiberglass pool is 16x42 and we’re planning on having ten feet of brushed concrete around the deck coping except the deep end side which will be 5 feet. My wife is now starting to think that’s too much and it’s going to be a concrete jungle. Too her point we are also putting in a 12x12 paver patio butting up against the one side as well. I kind of feel like the more space the better, but was curious how everyone else uses their decking space.

It can always be covered with a deck box, flowers or something else. It costs a lot to add it later. But this is purely a personal choice based on your tastes. Where in MD are you?

There can never be enough patio/deck. You can have enough for a full court basketball game, and 2 extra teams show up and have to wait to play.

I put in 1800 sq ft and it HURT. And 2 months later I was kicking myself for shaving a couple feet off the backside of the pool that would rarely be used.

It will be... Until you start adding things like a table and chairs, chaise lounges and umbrellas, a fire pit or other seating area, planters or a barbecue, a deck box to hold pool toys and accessories, etc. Also, if you're going to put a safety fence around the area, that'll tend to make the space seem smaller anyway.
