Just heading down the new build road and our pool guy suggests that we go with an Ionizer system. I've only had regular chlorine before so I am curious to know what general consensus on an ionizing system is. Thanks for the help.

Even if you eschew salt, skip the ionizer. Pool builders are notorious for rarely being any good at water chemistry, in spite of their self-proclamations otherwise. Remember, the guy on the plant floor making a car is not an expert in oil refining, even if his handiwork will one day be full of and powered by the stuff.
