I ran the 2100gph pump just fine on my 16’ pool with a skimmer with moderate debris. I had plenty of flow- enough to run my pressure side cleaner. In fact I had to use a ball valve to reduce the pressure or it ran too fast.
- with the smaller filter you will need to backwash more frequently than with a larger one as it will get dirty more quickly (when it reaches 25% over clean pressure)
but it will certainly work for however long you need to make due.
If you maintain your pool according to TFP principles and avoid algae

then the smaller filter will only be a mild inconvenience. Bigger is better when it comes to filters of course but upping it isnt necessarily a necessity.
If you do get algae & need to do the
SLAM Process you’ll find yourself needing to backwash frequently - inconvenient but doable.
If you decide to upgrade the pump itself consider a 2 speed if a variable speed is out of your price range. This allows you to run at a lower speed/rpm mostly all the time during normal operation which allows you to always be skimming, filtering and running a swcg if you have one, while saving $ on electricity compared to a single speed pump.
