Interesting water read - oops

Was just about to post a question thread on here due to my extremely high chlorine reading.

Tested water last night and was at 2.5ppm with CYA at 60. Turned up the percentage on the SWG but poured in half a bottle of chlorine as well. Didn’t want my pool to turn green.

This morning I went to test the chlorine. Right when I got to the pool I could smell chlorine. Take my test and after I got to 20 ppm I stopped testing. Thinking of everything I did there was no way I could get there. Maybe it was a false reading, I’ll test tonight after some chlorine could burn off.

Tested tonight and got to 15ppm before I was almost out of reagent. Decided to stop so I could have a little left to test before I got a refill.

Turned SWG off and thought about how I got two “false” readings in a row. Looked at my reagent bottles and something seemed off. Looked again and realized I was using the cc reagent, not the fc reagent. I accidentally put them in the wrong spot and was just going through the motions.

Check your bottles if you think you get a “false” reading. It was probably user error just as I discovered.

You were very good to analyze your process and identify the error. Great work!!!

I have found it easier to group my bottles for each test, plus each test has its own vial & magnetic stirrer. I purchased a flat tackle box that I could adjust each department.
See photo.
Bottom is speedstirrer and FC vial with magnetic stirrer
Next are the 2 tests for FC and CC separated by a divider
Next is CH test
Next is TA test
To the right is CYA test, and pH test
I also use a pH meter which is in separate case.
On the underneath I have all my spare vials, reagents and the Salt test which I only do every couple of months. May move the salt test to the top row when I get my SWCG.
I have found separating each prevents mixing which reagents to add. Plus I have marked on the reagent bottle, x drops for 10ml sample, etc. It is always a verification even though done the tests hundreds of times.
Hope this provides you some ideas.

I don't have extra vial so I just use what the kit came with that being said I ALWAYS do the FC first and that vial has a sticker. When the test is over and done with the reagent gets tucked into its vial in its own cubicle then I pull the next vial and line up then next three reagents, when that test is done the reagents get put back and the next 3 come out.....never a chance to mix things up and nobody gets close to my kit.
