Hi All- I've read a lot of the forum posts on here about solar covers (colors, thickness, etc) and think that's the route we have decided to go with a reel system. However, the property is a vacation rental (next door to us) so the cover will mainly be on during gap days and wintertime. The only time that guests may need to cover/uncover the pool themselves is if they pay for pool heating in the wintertime and need to re-apply the cover to avoid night time heat loss. *We are going to charge guests the total cost for heating the pool if they want it (LP heater so avg $250-300 per day)

Is a solar cover the best way to go? Will it really make enough of a difference in night-time heat loss during San Diego winter months (we live inland so it does get quite cold at night) to make it worth the hassle? Is there an easier way to remove the cover than a single reel system?

Covers can be a pain to deal with for very little heat savings when it gets in the burrr months. They mainly work for the "shoulder" months (either side of summer) to help extend the swim season.

I have read that it really does not matter if it is a cheap cover or a big money cover........in the end they are all the same. Most last a year or two then it is time to replace.

$300 per day to run a pool heater? I would be more worried about having insurance to cover your butt if someone gets hurt in that pool. I would just set up the rent accordingly set $$ for monthly rental with pool and set $$ for no pool access.. I know alot of people that make good money and are well off and none of them would pay $300 per day to use a pool
